First Presbyterian Church is excited to announce the hiring of our new Organist/Director of Music, Ms. Shannon Murphy.

Ms. Murphy found her love of music at a young age, beginning piano studies at age four. She graduated from Westminster Choir College of Rider University (Princeton, NJ), with her B.M. in Piano. There she studied piano with Ena Bronstein-Barton and organ with Ken Cowan. While acquiring her degree, she broadened her experience with studies in voice, piano pedagogy, and choral conducting. A finalist in class competitions, she was selected to play Grieg’s piano concerto with the Westminster Conservatory Orchestra. During her studies, she also sang with the Westminster Symphonic Choir under the baton of conductors such as Berliner Philharmoniker director Sir Simon Rattle, and Philadelphia Orchestra director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

In 2012 Ms. Murphy founded the Murphy Piano Studio, where she teaches private voice and piano lessons. She also conducts the preparatory division of the New York City Children’s Chorus. For the past six years, she has served as music director for Messiah’s Reformed Fellowship where she played for services and founded the adult choir.

Currently, she is pursuing a master’s degree in organ performance at the Manhattan School of Music, where she studies with Kent Tritle. This summer she looks forward to furthering her studies in choral conducting at the Mostly Modern Festival, and in organ performance at the Longwood Organ Academy and the Oregon Bach Festival.

Shannon will begin on August 1. We are looking forward to her leadership, her energy, and the giftedness that she will share through our worship services!
